Waiouru |
South East of Mount Ruapehu at the southern end of the Desert Road, Waiouru is a military township with its major tourist attraction being the National Army Museum. For railway and history enthusiasts Waiouru is 8 kilometres from the Tangiwai Memorial, which commemorates New Zealand’s worst ever rail disaster that occurred on Christmas Eve 1953.
