Tongariro National Park

The Tongariro National Park was established in 1887. The first national park in New Zealand and only the forth in the world. The park holds a dual world heritage status for outstanding natural and intangible cultural values. The park includes three major volcanic peaks Tongariro (1978 Meters) Ngauruhoe (2291 Meters) and Mt Ruapehu (2797 Meters) which most recently erupted in 1996.

Gifting of the Park

The Park was gifted to the nation by Te Heuheu Tukino IV, paramount chief of the Maori Ngati Tuwharetoa iwi in 1887 before becoming formally constituted by Act of Parliament in 1894.

Activities In Tongariro National Park

The main activities in Tongariro National park are hiking and climbing in summer, and skiing and snowboarding in winter. There is also good access to mountain biking, hunting, trout fishing, horse riding, rafting and scenic flights.

The most popular walks include the Tongariro Alpine Crossing an 18km walk across the main craters of Mt Tongariro. Treks in the park include the Tongariro Northern circuit one of nine New Zealand great walks and the 3-6 day Round the Mountain walk (Ruapehu). For those less energetic there are plenty of short walks throughout the park.

Mt Ruapehu boasts two popular ski fields Turoa and Whakapapa. Turoa has Australasia's longest drop and Whakapapa is New Zealand's Largest Ski field.

Accessing Tongariro National Park

The park is most accessible from the towns of Turangi, Whakapapa Village, National Park, Ohakune and Raetihi all of which offer various types of accommodation, restaurants, bars, park information and activity operators.

A great place to start is the Tongariro National Park visitors centre located in the Whakapapa Village on SH48.
