On the Southern side of Mount Ruapehu, at the base of Turoa Ski FIeld, Ohakune is a base for visitors to the Tongariro National Park and Whanganui National Park. The township offers accommodation, entertainment and access to a number of recreational activities. It’s also the home of the Giant Carrot, the Carrot Carnival and Mardi Gras.
Motels, Hotels, Backpacker to Luxury Lodge accommodation are all available in the Ohakune district.
Turoa Ski Field is just up the road. Walking tracks including the tongariro crossing are accessible from Ohakune. Mountain biking and trout fishing are other options.
Ohakune is known for its nightlife with fine dining and superb apres Ski.
