Plateau Central

5 Places in the Central Plateau

The Central Plateau and surrounds is a fairly vast area, and it’s quite likely as a visitor that you’ll only see a small part of what this amazing area has to offer. It’s easy to find reference to places like Taupo, Ohakune, Taumarunui, Turangi, Turoa, Whakapapa, Taihape and Raetihi. What’s not so easy, is finding the gems that could be considered hidden in these areas.

1. The Ruatiti Domain.

On the banks of the Manganui-o-te-Ao river about 30 minutes from Raetihi you’ll find the Ruatiti Domain. The Domain is a great camping location away from pretty much everything. You can’t whip over the road to the shop for an ice cream, but that can be a good thing. You can swim, relax, tell stories and make friends with the other campers. And you’ll also see stunning landscapes and the odd stud farm full of horses for sale like Misty Canyon.

2. Mellonsfolly Guest Ranch

A little further down the road from the Ruatiti Domain is Mellonsfolly Guest Ranch. In fact it’s at the end of the road…then you turn right and go a little further, or something like that. In splendid isolation, you’ll find a Wild West town. If you like the idea of fishin’, gun slingin’, and sitting round the camp fire telling tall stories, this is for you. You have to leave your car on the outskirts of this town…but, if you have one, your horse is welcome.

3. Waitonga Falls & Taranaki Falls

The journey to Waitonga Falls is just as scenic as the destination. At approximately 40 meters, Waitonga falls is the tallest waterfall in the Tongariro National Park. You need to allow 1.5-2 hours to get there and of course, if you’re walking in an alpine area, you have to take the necessary cautions. The walk starts about 11 kms along the Ohakune Mountain Road and on a good day the scenery and views are spectacular. Taranaki Falls is an interesting 20m waterfall that cuts through and flows over an ancient lava flow. This results in the falls' unique setting and shape. The walk is 5.3 km’s and you will need to allow 2 hours.

4. River Valley Lodge

River Valley is situated in the Rangitikei District of the North Island. It is near the central North Island town of Taihape. If you are traveling South, turn left at the River Valley signpost, 18km after Waiouru. If you are traveling North, use the Gretna Hotel in Taihape as your starting point, the 32km drive will last around 35 minutes after taking you through some of New Zealand's finest and most picturesque hill country. River Valley Lodge is nestled on the banks of the mighty Rangitikei River with its iconic cliffs as a backdrop. It’s an ideal base for those wanting to be a little adventurous with river rafting and horse trekking being the most popular activities. For those needing a less active break try the on-site day spa or a spot of Golf.

5. Secret Fishing Spots

If we told you where they were, they wouldn’t exactly be secret, but if you’re in to fishing you’ll know that that the rivers that feed into, and Lake Taupo itself are famous for fishing. Head for Turangi and ask around and you’re sure to find someone with a great tip for you.
