The Museum building was built around 1930 for railway sheds and came from Waiouru via Rangataua and MTRO re-located to Ohakune around 1990.
The Railway Museum features items and displays from the late 1800's including:
- Feature display Tangiwai Train Disaster of Christmas Eve 1953 where 151 lives were lost.
- Display Information Panels
- Timeline Inforation, North Island main Trunk Railway 1870-2013
- A brief history of the North Island Main Trunk
- Raurimu Spiral, Last Spike on Nov 1908 and Main Trunk Milestones.
- Railway Control Units (Post War)
- Semaphere Signals and early railway workers cabin, tools, and historic photo,s
- Future displays , Sawmilling, Market Gardens, Mountain Road and Ski Field,
The featured display from the Tangiwai Train Disaster of Christmas Eve 1953 is well worth viewing so please come and visit! We are open daily between 11am to 3pm.
