Join us for any one of a variety of horse treks to suit all levels of riding experience. Ride through forest and river or trails with spectacular views of Mt Ruapehu.

Are you looking for a place to escape the Mountain Madness?  Come and enjoy the company of our wonderful horses.  Let our guides take you to a place of peace and quiet.  Enjoy views of the forest and experience the beautiful flora and fauna New Zealand has to offer.  Or go the other way with great views of Mt Ruapehu and Mt Taranaki where you’re surrounded by nothing but farmland.  The choice is yours! Enjoy a relaxing walk on horseback with opportunities for a trot and a canter.

Ruapehu Homestead Horse Treks is the perfect activity for a closed day up the mountain or on any given day as we are open 364 days of the year.  A few minutes drive from Ohakune is where your horse trekking adventure begins. 

We have been operating for over 24 years since we first came to live in Ohakune. Our love of horses, the great outdoors, stunning scenery in Rangataua/Ohakune and the breathtaking backdrop of Mt Ruapehu makes for an incredible horse riding experience on any given day.

We cater for all levels of horse riding so if it's your first time please be assured that we have experienced horse riders to guide you and our horses are safe and sound.


Horse Treks:
1 hour horse trek: This is a good trek for first timers and people who want to get back in the saddle. You’ll have a walk through historic Rangataua and make your way towards the forest. Cross the river and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

2 hour horse trek: This is a great trek if you’re looking for excitement. Make your way through the forest towards the clearing, where you’ll get a spectacular view of Mt Ruapehu. Bring your camera and get ready to be blown away!

2.5 hour horse trek: Want to get a bit extra out of your horse trek? Then this is the option for you! Explore Rangataua forest and keep an eye out for “kiwi wildlife”. We’ll make a stop half way where you can enjoy a nice refreshment and find out more about this special place in New Zealand.
